by Elaine Fluker
Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett -Smith and Spike Lee have a beautiful thing in common-all have donned the wearable art of 27 year old Aklia Chinn.
Chinn, who owns Aklia’s – a Hollywood boutique that sells jewelry, books, African art and home accents-has been creating one-of-a-kind pieces since her high school days. Over the years her designs have evolved from photos of friends laminated onto earrings to jewelry that incorporates beads, pendants and other ornaments from Africa, India, and Central Asia.
For centuries, adornment has played a crucial role in the lives of tribal people says Chinn, a native of Los Angeles. I want my creations to remind us of our connection to the ancestors………”
Where Magazine: Great Finds
Eddie Murphy, Queen Latifah and Whoopie Goldberg have donned her wares. So did Gloria Stuart (the Older Rose) in “Titanic”. At Aklia’s, young Aklia Chinn fashions stunning jewelry from elements she collects in “tribal areas” all over the world. The exotic studio also showcases objects for the home, books, even incense. Shopping here is like traveling to a wonderful, far-off place.
